Rose’s story

Rose not only feared for her life when she left her abusive husband; she faced the terrifying possibility she might not be able to provide for herself and her sons. "I was determined to make it on my own, since giving up and returning to a life of abuse would have surely put me in the grave. I took an unknown step forward and left a life of fear, hoping for a more peaceful one," says Rose.

Rose applied for a no-interest loan from an emergency fund initiative (supported by CWF), which strives to remove financial barriers that prevent women from leaving their abusers. Loans are used for items such as rent deposits, moving expenses, document replacement, deposits for hydro or telephone, and household essentials like beds. Once a woman has repaid her loan, the money is used to help another woman in need. Without the support she received, Rose believes she could never have broken free from the abuse she suffered.

"The loan assisted me with the money I so badly needed… allowing me and my boys to have a new home," she says. Rose and her sons still reside in that house. "We are now living that life of peace we hoped for. This is an accomplishment that I am very proud of."”
